Entrepreneur, fashion model, magazine publisher and now anti-aging skin care impresario, Judith Mancini’s multi-faceted career has revolved around one central theme: the concept of looking and feeling better. As she prepares for the launch of La Contessa Advance Skincare – an exclusive line of beauty products – she continues to embrace her philosophy that beauty, indeed, is skin deep but also much more!
Born in 1947 in Los Angeles, California, Judith grew up in Los Angeles. Judith and her brother were raised by their grandparents, as their mother had contracted polio when Judith was just 5 years old and subsequently, their father abandoned them. Judith’s grandfather was co-founder of one of the first prominent re-habilitation sanatoriums for alcohol abuse, which was going to fund Judith’s college education. But with a twist of fate, the sanatorium was closed, and Judith realized she would have to work to pay for her college tuition herself. At first she worked for the telephone company as an information operator (boring, boring) and then became a model for Mary Webb Davis agency. Still, finding this did not “pay the bills” she dropped out of Cal State Long Beach, with much regret, after only one year.
Seeking independence and adventure, Judith put her modeling career on hold and became a United Airlines Stewardess (really, there were no “flight attendants” in those days). Judith did find adventure, flying on a multitude of aircraft including the queen of the skies-DC-6, Sud-Aviation Caravelle, Vickers- Viscount, B-720, B727, B737, DC -8 and finally the “big” DC-8-61. It was the glamorous days of flying when a girl could get to know her passengers, serving “business men only” flights where the men indulged in cocktails, dinner and cigars! Judith travelled the world, spending time in all the beautiful cities with her fellow adventure-seeking stewardesses.
In 1968, while based in Chicago, Judith met William McGuire, a swinging, single, Second Officer for United Air Lines. Ten short months later they were married and Judith found herself forced to quit the company because of marriage. Those were the days when an airline could enforce “single” status for their female employees.
The most wonderful blessing of this marriage came in 1973 and 1975 with the birth of son Matthew and daughter Meagan, respectively. The family moved to Incline Village, Lake Tahoe, Nevada. But with another twist of fate, her high-flying marriage came to a screeching halt within a few years of the move. Finding herself with minimal child support and two children to raise, she returned to modeling and took a second job as a tour guide. She rapidly advanced to the position of divisional vice-president of a national tour company. Finally, she was using her brains and discovered she loved the world of business.
Along the way she met and married TK Vodrey, the owner of a famous Los Angeles pub. His family had been in the publishing business for many years and together the couple bought Let’s Live a small, struggling magazine in the dietary supplement and beauty industry, inching along with a circulation of 20,000. Bringing the publication directly under her wing, she turned the publication around, quadrupling ad sales and dramatically increasing readership to an audited circulation of 1.7 million within 18 months.
This was a time of great growth in the dietary supplement and beauty industry, but all of the major companies were owned by men. Judith was the first woman in this area to be the owner and CEO of a major company. She not only grew the circulation of the main title, Let’s Live, but also introduced several other magazines including Be Healthy!. In 1995 as other companies in the industry were being sold or going public, Judith’s magazine publishing company was sought after by many entities and she decided it was the perfect time to sell.
It also seemed the right time to end a tumultuous marriage to the pub owner whom was much more interested in the beverages sold in his pub, than the family life Judith sought.
Happily, soon after the divorce Judith met and married the love of her life, Lou Mancini and they continue to live happily in Southern California.
The next chapter of Judith’s life was unfolding as she began her marriage to Lou. Both Matt and Meagan were now grown and had set off to begin their life adventures. Lou was a busy CEO and their life was filled with many friends and lots of traveling and corporate entertaining. But this was not enough for an energetic lady. While in the publishing business, Judith began studying skincare and was privileged to have access to many of the most important studies being published on cutting edge ingredients for anti-aging.
For several years and after much research, Judith founded La Contessa Skincare. The line consisted of three (3) products and was formulated with one of the first penta peptides. The anti-aging results were remarkable. Unfortunately, Judith was dealing with an unscrupulous formulator. The formulator was from a European country and saw an opportunity to deal with a major worldwide pharmaceutical company instead of a small American business. The pharmaceutical company would allow Judith to sell a mere $250,000 gross and that was it. Judith decided to put the business on hold for a few years.
Now, in 2012, Judith Mancini is poised to launch the next generation in anti-aging beauty products, La Contessa Advanced Skincare – a line of five products for anti-aging, each with clinically-tested ingredients, notably glycolic acid, plant stem-cell complex, resveratrol with peptides and telomere DNA. At age 65, she embraces both the challenge and excitement of beginning the next chapter in what promises to be an entirely fresh way of keeping skin youthful.
September of 2013 found Judith once again embarking on a new adventure. She was asked to develop a radio/video show for Universal Broadcasting Network and created Dishing The Details. Judith and her co-host, Noelle, dished the juiciest celeb gossip along with airing their thoughts on the hard news of the day and interviewed many fascinating people.
