Award-Winning Author Karlyle Tomms on Your Book Your Brand Your Business

I’m excited to welcome a previous radio guest from my days on Blog Talk Radio to Your Book Your Brand Your Business on Monday, July 2 at 5 PM Eastern:

Karlyle Tomms is an award-winning author who grew up in the rural Ozarks. He worked most of his career in mental health services and addictions treatment and began writing fiction later in life. He has written for different regional magazines and newspapers over the years, and has often been selected to speak at both professional and non-professional events, as well as radio talk shows. His first novel, Confessions from thePumpkin Patch won the 2016 New Apple Awards Medalfor General Fiction and was endorsed by Marideth Sisco who is known for her work on “Winter’s Bone” the four- time Oscar nominated film starring Jennifer Lawrence.

His general method for fiction has been to define a protagonist and allow that character to tell his or her own story from first person perspective as though the protagonist is writing an autobiography. His fictional books are about people overcoming social, psychological, emotional and spiritual challenges.

Karlyle’s recent book releases include The Calling, the second novel in his The Soul Encounters series, and The Gulls Are Always Laughing, a book of poetry which spans his childhood in the Ozarks through love and lovers to “Everything Else.” He has given it the subtitle of “My Life, So Far, in Poetry,” and in many respects, it is a spiritual journey in poetry.

During the interview, Karlyle will discuss his concept of “self-help” through fiction, his motivation for pursuing a writing career as he approaches retirement, and his experiences with writing and publishing, among other things. We welcome your participation in the live chat and will address your questions on the air. Please join us for an inspiring, informative episode.

In the meantime, visit Karlyle at his website www.karlyletomms.com.

Yes, Readers Judge Books By Their Covers

Ironically, the old adage, “Don’t judge a book by its cover,” applies to almost everything in life except books. If you’re serious about reaching your audience, achieving respectable (or even remarkable) book sales, and expanding your brand, influence, and business, do not skimp on the book cover.

An original, unique and compelling cover is a must for any author who wants their book to act as a vehicle for something greater — whether you plan to leave the corporate world to launch your own business, become a respected motivational speaker, build your medical practice, or attain whatever goals inspired you to write and publish your book in the first place. Don’t negate your hard work to save a few dollars by entrusting this powerful marketing tool to a cheap online service or using a templated cover that screams, “This is a self-published book!”

When it comes book cover design, consider the wisdom of the expression “You get what you pay for.” Hire a professional who is not only a master of their craft, but also understands how to visually represent your book’s message to attract readers. Because it doesn’t matter how valuable the book content is if your cover doesn’t inspire them to click on your title to preview and purchase it. In the world of independent publishing, where everyone can leverage technology to bring their book directly to the masses, it’s imperative to produce a quality product that speaks to your main audience enough for them to give it another click — instead of moving on to another title in an infinite cyber-world of choices.

How do you find the right designer?

As with many things in life and business, word-of-mouth is probably the best option. Ask the people around you for recommendations. For example, if you know someone who’s published a book with an excellent cover, there’s nothing wrong with asking who designed it. If you’re already a member of a writer’s group online or in person, there’s a good chance someone in it does book cover design. Or conduct an online search.

Ideally, your cover designer will also be an author who understands important elements like file requirements, spine calculation, and layering, to ensure a seamless process when it’s time to upload the file to Create Space or your preferred self-publishing platform.

As for pricing, a cover design fee can go as high as $1,000 or more depending on the designer’s experience. It’s one reason why I included it in my publishing packages, after connecting with exceptional cover designers/authors who’ve agreed to a set price. My clients receive a customized, high quality book cover as part of their overall publishing package because the cost is already factored in. But no matter how you choose to proceed with your self-publishing goals, always remember, readers do judge books by their covers.

Understanding the Independent Publishing Process

When I wrote and published my first book in 2008, I didn’t know what I didn’t know in terms of the mechanics of independent publishing. Yes, I knew how to write (though the evolution of my novel is a blog post unto itself) via my professional writing and editing experience, and I understood enough about the process to seek out a professional editor. Beyond that, however, the process of transforming my manuscript into a marketable offering on Amazon.com (and everywhere books are sold online) was a daunting task.

Oh my God, where can I find a talented book cover designer I can trust?

Hold on, I need to format my book…and not just for paperback, but for something called Kindle?

Fast-forward to the present. I’m blessed to own a business that includes being an independent publishing consultant and offering all-inclusive packages designed to make the process of writing and publishing a book simple, efficient, and fun. I contract with interesting clients and a team of creative professionals who provide the services that are beyond my zone of genius — like cover design and formatting — and factored into the cost. The result is personalized service with everything you need to produce a quality book.

Are you ready to publish your book? Here are my six simple steps to independent publishing:

  1. Select a Publishing Package– Whatever your goal, I offer a package that meets your needs.
  2. Choose Your Publication Date – I require approval on the FINAL edits a minimum of two months prior.
  3. Commit to Your Project – My collaborative editing process requires a time commitment from both of us.
  4. Approve Final Edits – After a few rounds of editing, you, the author, must approve the final edits before the manuscript moves into formatting.
  5. Approve Formatting – Once you approve the final edits, your manuscript moves into the formatting stage. What is formatting? It pertains the interior style of the book including fonts, headers, chapter templates, and justification. When your manuscript makes it to the formatting part of the process, you can no longer add or remove paragraphs, rewrite sentences, delete content or add new content. When is the time to do that? At any point within Step 4. By the time you approve final edits, you’ve reviewed your document repeatedly. Take as long as you need before signing off because we will not make any further editing changes after it moves into formatting.
  6. Approve Proof Copy – Before your book goes live online, you must approve either a digital version or a paperback proof. If you’re a new author, I recommend the latter.

Aside from editing, formatting, and cover design, my publishing packages include an ISBN (International Book Standard Number) assignment, a keyword-rich back cover description, set-up on Amazon, and a free paperback proof copy, among other services. You retain 100% ownership and all rights to your book. For the full list, click here.

As your independent publishing consultant, I am just as vested as you in the outcome. Producing good books with original, compelling covers and stylish, readable formatting is my top priority. Making you look good is my goal. If you have any questions or would like to schedule your no-obligation coaching call to discuss your project, contact me.

And be sure to tune in every Monday at 5 PM Eastern for Your Book Your Brand Your Business.
