A digital signal is information that has been converted into numbers which can then be read to recreate the original information. Digital signals have many benefits in that they do not degrade over time, they can be compressed, and they can be selectively and easily manipulated. Digital is what makes high definition possible. Now where it can get a bit confusing is that in the broadcast world there is a shorthand whereby digital has an additional definition in that it often refers to digital signals that are broadcast via the Internet. In radio for example, digital broadcasting often refers to internet radio, as distinct from other types of radio to include satellite radio (which also  uses digital signals, just broadcast via satellite), terrestrial (am and fm) radio (which uses analog signals), and to make matters more confusing, HD (high definition) radio, which is a hybrid that broadcasts both digital and analog signals within an analog framework.
