One of the greatest patient advocacy advancements in cancer care is the patient navigator program. As administrative clinical director of the UNC Cancer Network, Jean Sellers has spent years implementing this program in sites across the state of North Carolina that helps make sure those who are faced with a cancer diagnosis know where to turn at each step of the process. With nurse navigation, a person with cancer is paired up with a nurse who stays with them throughout their treatments and walks them through the sometimes-confusing maze of medication, appointments and doctors.
